Population of Sweden increased from 8.1 million persons in 1971 to 10.3 million persons in 2020 growing at an average annual rate of 0.50%. Total population is based on the de facto definition of population, which counts all residents regardless of legal status or citizenship--except for refugees not permanently settled in the country of Sweden's population has become much more ethnically, religiously and linguistically diverse over the past 70 years as a result of immigration. The database contains computerized transcripts of parish records, prepared by the parish vicar or clerk and sent to the government agency SCB (Statistics Sweden). The computerization has been carried out with the Sweden population density. Sweden population density is 22.5 people per square kilometer (58.4/mi 2) as of April 2021. Density of population is calculated as permanently settled population of Sweden divided by total area of the country. Total area is the sum of land and water areas within international boundaries and coastlines of Sweden. Stockholm is located across 14 islands on the coast southeast of Sweden at the mouth of Lake Malaren.

Sweden has a total population of 10.4 million; and a low population density of 25 inhabitants per square kilometre (65/sq mi). 87% of Swedes live in urban areas, which cover 1.5% of the entire land area. The highest concentration is in the central and southern half of the country.
